Most engines share these characteristics: The power curve arches its back and flattens out before the power peak, but beyond the peak it usually falls off rather abrubtly. So, a very short moment past the HP peak, just like you say, power is down to the same level that we will get after the shift. Close ratios mean very shortly after the peak, wider ratios (remember old days?) mean we have to sit it out a bit longer.
With your experience and my theory (shoot, it's just plain school physics) I bet we shift just the same! OK? ;-)
