Default gas cap material

Anyone know if the gas cap is painted or coated? I have two little nicks in it that I want to buff out, but wanted avoid making things worse.

Thanks

Default Re: gas cap material

The cap is aluminum with clearcoat on it. It is just like the wheels and all of the aluminum inside the car.

Default I believe the cap is painted or plated...

The wheels on the TT are painted and then clearcoated and the gas cap appears to match the wheels, the interior aluminum is plated clear. The so-called aluminum Audi shift gates are actually die-cast zinc with a chrome-like plating.

Not sure which process was used in this case, but it seems like plating would last longer and be far more durable on a part like a gas cap...
