More info on immobilizer...
ECU is adapted to instrument cluster (where the immoblizer resides). Transponder in key fob, instrument cluster and ECU are aligned with same secret code. If instrument cluster is replaced both key fob and ECU must be re-aligned (re-adapted to new cluster). If key fob is lost a new one must be manufactured and adapted (tracer to requesting party).
Adaptation procedures for ECU reported by David yesterday covers the task exactly, so I have nothing to add here except: if the secret code is entered incorrectly 3 times ECU will "lock out" further attemps for a period of 10 minutes. A total "lock out" time of 255 minutes are available b/4 the ECU will fail to accept further attemps, ever (anti-hack).
The W on the key fob is meaningless as many were produced w/o immobilizer feature. However, all subsequent keys (marked with W) were/are produced so the key fob CAN work with immobilizer. Hence, W is always present in a car so equipped with an immobilizer but it dosen't mean the feature in fact exists.
Finally, retrofit of immobilizer feature can be acquired with new cluster, ECU and key fob (if not marked with W).
Car will not start by twisting off ignition socket as cluster requires transponder in key fob. If anyone gets your code (David & I have proven how difficult that is...a few bucks and the right employee and we are all at risk) then the system is easily defeated. I think it wise to guard VIN, ECU, cluster numbers and, needless to say...the 4 digit secret code!
