Are hands-free cell phones really safer?

This morning I was trying to use my cell phone. I rarely use it in the car so I don't have one hard-wired. I took it out of the glove compartment and started untangling the cord, trying to fit that ridiculous earpiece into me ear, etc.
What an ordeal, and I was thinking how much less distracting it would have been just to use the phone in a conventional manner.
I had read that cell phone use is last on the list of distractions to drivers, with eating and fiddling with the radio near the top of the list.
What's next? Hands-free McDonald's?

drunk! Whether this is true or not, since I read it I try to never talk while driving - I'll only take certain calls and won't talk more than a minute.

then all you have to do is press the button to answer the call and you can drive with both hands.

This study got quoted all over the place last summer. Here's a link to the National Safety Council's excerpt from the study.

some moron not turning onto a perfectly clear road, or not using his blinker, or driving 5-10 UNDER the speed limit he's got a cell phone up to his ear.
i know there are people who use them responsibly and dont add to the already gigantic number of morons on the road, but all i've noticed is that the ubiquity of cell phones has added considerably to my own road rage.
just what i need. some dip**** in front of me holding me up because he's busy playing hip and self important. it's just a phone. it doesnt make you ****in james bond or ceo of globocorp intl. have some consideration and realize that people are trying to DRIVE around you. if youre on the road your responsibility is to DRIVE. if you get a call from the president, pull over if you cant handle doing 2 things at once.
love,
me

driving and remembered something I forgot to do, and had to make the call right away.
I guess, w/r/t a law, there's no way to differentiate between that situation and people who just love to talk on their cell phones.
