Default Harper's Ferry September 22nd Day Trip & Dinner Update & Details

Harper's Ferry Day-Trip Attendees,

Here are some of the details of our trip on September 22nd. Just two
and a half weeks away and I think we're going to have a lot of fun. Let's hope for beautiful
weather! As you may know, Dave Berson (EconomisTT) and I did a recon run up there
on Saturday morning to scope out the route. We're mainly taking Rt. 28 up there starting
in Gaithersburg, MD at The Rio. Once you make the short drive to get out of Gaithersburg,
it is a very nice drive with lot's of open two-lane roads with fun hills and scenic views.
Harper's Ferry is a mere 45 miles from our starting point and it takes just an hour to
get there.

So here are some details:

Meeting Date: Saturday, September 22nd
Meeting Time: 9:30 to 10:00 AM
Departure Time: 10:00 AM sharp
Meeting Location:

Rio Parking Lot
9811 Washingtonian Center
Gaithersburg, MD 20878

Here's a picture with a map that I saved from Map Quest.

Directions:

From points south (VA):
Washington Beltway (inner loop) to 270 North.
Rt. 270 North to Rt. 370 West (Sam Eig Hwy)
At the end of the exit to Sam Eig, bear right and take the uphill exit to
Washingtonian Blvd. Turn left at the light and follow Washingtonian
through two traffic circles to the parking lot for the Rio.

From points north (Germantown, etc):
Come down 270 South to Rt. 370 (Sam Eig)
Follow the direction above from Sam Eig.

From points central (MD):
This is dealer's choice, but the easiest way from a direction perspective is to take 95 south to
the Washington Beltway outer loop, follow the outer loop around to 270 north and then
follow the same directions as the points south crowd above. If you want to take back roads,
contact me via e-mail and I can send you some directions.

Group Drive Route:

We will write up the detailed driving directions including mileage soon and I'll send them out.
We will also print those directions to hand out on the day of the drive.

Harper's Ferry Itinerary:

11:00 - 11:30 Arrival, Parking, Photo Op.
11:30 - 1:00 Shuttle to Historic Area, Free Time, Lunch
1:00 - 3:00 Group Tour (Optional)
3:00 - 4:15 Individual Tours, Return to Parking Area
4:15 - 4:45 Group Drive to Bavarian Inn
4:45 - 5:30 Check In, Cloths Changing
5:30 - 7:30 (approx) Dinner
7:30 Depart (for those who are leaving

Dinner Info:

We will be doing a group drive from Harper's Ferry to the Bavarian Inn starting around
4:15. One important point of note is that the Bavarian Inn requires minimum of
resort casual dress (khakis & golf type shirt for men, slacks & blouse or dress for
women). Most of you will probably want to wear shorts for the day at Harper's Ferry, so
bring a change of clothes for "dressing up" before dinner.

Since a large contingent of our group is staying at the inn, we are hoping that several from
that group will be willing to check in before dinner and share those rooms briefly for other's
to change.

Those of you who are staying at the Bavarian Inn that night, please respond back and
let me know if you're willing to let others from the group into your rooms to change.

Also, I just found out today that, due to the size of our group, we will most likely be required to
order from a fixed menu. Ala Carte is no longer viable with over 30 people coming. I will be
finalizing a menu in the next couple of days and sending out a request for a tally. If you have
any special dietary requirements, please let me know ASAP.

Bavarian Inn Info:

Bavarian Inn
R.R. 3, Box 30
Shepherdstown, WV 25443
(304) 876-2551

FRS Radios:

Since we will be trying to do most of the driving as group drives, it will really help if you
can bring an FRS radio. We will be using the same channel we used at Falling Water (4).

Please contact me with questions or concerns if you have any. Also, please contact me ASAP if
you're staying at the Bavarian Inn and are willing to let others into your room briefly to change
into dinner clothes.

Default BTW, can we meet closer to my house? :o)

Kidding, of course, I'm only 200 yards from this spot!
