Default If you want functional information, go GPS for sure......

a basic compass will show direction but if you are actually directionally challenged....... then GPS units will do so much more (cue the music for those old cuisinart ads... it slices, it dices.....):
1) New GPS units include built-in (and add-in)Maps showing roads etc and your location on them as you travel along(very cool....)
2) Most GPS units have a track back feature (done different ways with different brands) that shows you how to retrace the path you have just taken.
3) You can have a GPS display a digital compass face just like a compass if you only want the basics.
4) and so much more!!!

The new GPS handhelds are great, I just upgraded from an 8 year old unit.... the new one was 1/2 the price, worked faster, is accurate to 3m instead of 30m, and has the built in mapping. After much research (kind of like getting my TT) I got the Garmin etrex Legend, I love it!! I'll have it at TT-East if anyone is interested.
2 other notes, not all handheld GPS units will work inside a car (the etrex does), and some GPS units are designed specifically to be mounted in and for use in vehicles.
I love GPS units..... when you are up on a glacier full of crevasses in a raging whiteout blizzard it is sure great to know exactly where you are!! I'm just now learning about using one in a car.....

Just curious, are you driving to TT-East or flying?
