Default Has anyone had a bad MAF actually kill your car? As in, had to have it towed?

Car has been sputtering intermittently for the last few days. Almost like it was misfiring. Boost gage and tach show no appreciable lurching. VAG-COM scans yesterday and day before result in zero fault codes.

Today, on the way home, a whole bunch of lurching, sputtering and then loss of power. Car is dead. I wait, restart it and drive 100 yards, same thing happens. Try one more time and it goes 20 yards and dies. Call AAA, have it towed to house, VAG-COM shows only one fault which is

P1128 - Fuel Trim; Bank 1 (Mult): System too Lean

There never was a CEL. In replacing my previous 3 MAFs, I always got a CEL.

I have never heard of a MAF actually killing the car; I have only heard of various degrees of reduction in power.

Default That is a possibility...

Other P1128 things

-Exhaust system components removing and nstalling

-Fuel injectors checking

-Fuel pressure regulator and residual pressure checking

-Fuel pump checking

-Intake system for leaks (unmetered air) checking

-Secondary Air Injection (AIR) system components removing and installing

For my sake, I hope it's just the MAF

Default You had a Fiero!!!!!!!!!!

Ha, I had two.

I had a 1986 fast back red with tan leather, and I had a black on black 1988 Formula with the Lotus suspension. They were both fun cars. I loved them and neither one ever left me stranded or burst into flames. Lol.

With your symptoms I would start with the pump and filter.

I had a MAF do this. However I had a "MAF signal too low code" when it did.

Default Maybe. But why no code?

I was able to start the car and idle it while I checked some blocks last night, it ran fine, and the only code was the P1128.
