Heated mirror question......

I noticed that the heated mirrors on my 225QC are getting so hot that they start to burn my fingers after a few seconds contact. This seems an excessive amount of heat to me.
Also, the mirrors are heated to this level regardless of the ambient temp. Its summer in this part of the world (Australia) and temperatures are often in the 80-100 deg F range and the mirrors are still heated. All the manual says about the heated mirrors is that they are "activated when the ignition is turned on". Is the system really that dumb or is there a problem.
Anyone know more about this than the manual?
Thanks.
