for a GIAC X chip and found that the silver ECU case is completely surrounded by a black metal casing that I can see no way of removing. It prevents the removal of one of the wiring harnesses and the ECU box itself. My car is a 2003. Did I totally miss how the whle thing works, or is Audi perhaps trying to discourage chipping or ECU theft?

wires connecting to the ecu......if it is than to the left of the big one there is a gary lever and put it to the left slowly and then pull it out. then take a screw driver and pry the ecu out alittle and then once when u get it out then turn it around and do the same with with the other connected wire and then out comes ur ecu.

No, I got as far you are talking about. I had the ecu pulled free of its cradle, the black metal case I'm talking about comes out with the ecu box. But you can't move the box more than a couple of inches out of the cradle because of the fact that the one wiring harnesses is locked under the black metal casing with the ecu.

You've got the "chastity Belt" installed on late model cars. You need to break or drill out the rivets. There's instructions here somewhere. Do a search on chastity belt and you should come up with some info....

it's called a chastity belt among some people. I was put on in 03 to prevent tampering. There are ways around it, call the aftermarket dealer to help you out on this. APR has a solution. Also people on the other forum have over come it as well.
