i can't figure out why, but my computer is being a colossal pain...
for some reason, my computer thinks i keep randomly unplugging my modem (a usb cable modem).
every few minutes, it'll pop up, yelling at me...
here are a few screen shots.

and here are the steps i've been through so far (from a post in microsoft's help newsgroup that has yet to be addressed by microsoft or anyone else)...
I just installed Win2K Pro, and I've been having hardware
issues ever since.
Not only has it told me that I have an unknown PCI device,
but it's also telling me that I keep unplugging my modem.
I'm not unplugging my modem. The cable is fine (I've
checked it with three other cables now), and the port is
fine (I've checked it with several other ports). I've
shut it down and restarted it in safe mode, I've re-
installed my drivers... I'm at the end of my rope.

simply because all of my other usb devices are working perfectly *knock on wood*, and the modem was working just fine before i upgraded my os.
i'm not sure, though... either could be correct. i'll complain to the cable company until they issue me a new modem and see if that fixes anything, but i can't do that until tuesday.

That's the new driver for Win2K from the Toshiba site.
I've had several Toshiba devices with Win2K and they were all a bit of a pain to get up to date. Check for new drivers every couple of months.
My new Portege is running XP Pro and I have had nothing but clear sailing so far.
Good luck<ul><li><a href="http://www.toshiba.com/taisnpd/usb/PCX1100U_V3_21.zip">PCX1100U Driver</a></li></ul>

have you installed any win2K service packs ?
they might be on SP3 these days .. usually these SP's have fixes/patches for problems like this
it will take a little longer to get win2K tuned if you installed it on top of your old OS vs. a clean install ...
the unknown PCI device i have seen on a several other win2K machines.
1) sometimes on a modem that has data & voice. win2K can install the data as plug & play but NOT the voice ..
2) the other i have seen several times is when a newer version chip set is installed BUT the ata 100 driver was NOT installed. win2K did not contain support for ATA 100 controllers. if you have a intel MB they put out a new chip set after win2K was released. the chip must be installed 1st .. then the ATA 100 driver must be installed then rebooted TWICE - they are 2 different downloads ..
if you use IE "windows UPDATE" under TOOLS ... it will tell you what fixes/patches/updates are needed on your system
