Default Help with removing the oil filter on my '01 225 coupe

I've looked around and have not really found anything on how to remove it. I can get my hand around it, but when I take it off, what do I remove to give me space to take it out, or do I just yank and pull through the biggest opening I can find???

Anybody have any pictures?

And there is fresh oil under my oil filter, enough to have a drip every here and there.. should I be worried? It has some aftermarket p.o.s. (probably) oil filter on from before I got the car and I will be replacing it with an audi oil filter.
Curious to see if having an audi oil filter will stop the leak?

Default I've given up taking the filter out the bottom of the car >>>

Many folks here take the filter out the top. From memory:

- drain oil via the drain plug with the oil add cap off
- remove the 2 long trim pieces at the front of the engine bay
- loosen the filter from under the car
- slip a large zip lock bag over the filter
- continue to remove the filter by hand with the bag around it catching the dripping oil
- lift filter & bag up through the opening

You can figure the rest out on how to button it up and add the fresh oil. No pics for me, but there may be something in the FAQ

faq

Default Just changed mine on Sat.

I remove the left half of the cover over radiator and the small piece below the oil dip stick. Then reach down and pull filter straight up. The two big hoses are flexable and will move out of the way. Do the reverse for the new filter. Drop it in from the top, then reach in from bottom to screw it back in.

Default I always remove it from bottom just push it between the cooler pipe, i tried >>

putting bags around to catch oil taking out from the top etc etc, but it always ends up being a mess anyways so i just keep the damage limited to down low.

Ditto. I seem to use about a full roll of paper towels each time.
