Default hmm...dealer frowns on MT90 ingredients >>

I rolled into a dealership today and happened to ask a service rep (not a tech, so already I'm suspicious) about doing an MT90 change.

The rep claims that because MT90 is a GL-5 rated lube (which contains sulfur compounds that can corrode brass gear components) it should be avoided in favor of a GL-4 lube.

I know that many here swear by MT90. Does this add up?

Default Dealer is a dweeb (answering my own question) >>

A bit of googling reveals that MT90 IS a GL-4 lube. Never mind.

MT-90 is a GL4 which does not meet the GL4/5 VW501.50 requirements for gear lube.

Default GL4, GL5, MT1 and other stuff...

GL-4 requires the ASTM D-130 copper strip corrosion test meet some minimum standard.

GL-5 does not require the ASTM D-130 test for stability in the presence of copper and copper alloys. MIL-2105 does (to strip rating 3), but MT-1 (and MIL-PRF-2105E & SAE J2360) requires an even more severe D-130 test (to rating 2a).

The copper strip rating is determined by ASTM D-130 which is designed to assess the relative degree of corrosivity of the sulphur compounds contained in a petroleum product. The test is carried out by immersing a polished copper strip in a given quantity of sample, heating at a temperature and for a time characteristic of the material and comparing the copper strip after it has been washed and dried with the ASTM Copper Strip Corrosion Standards.

I think you'll find that Redline MT-90 and MTL both carry the MT-1 rating. Having said that, it isn't tested to the VW spec, which would be an issue if you're concerned about warranty.

Default It isn't a GL4/5 rated fluid. OE is actually Castrol TAF-X one of the few GL4/5s with the VW501.50

rating for gearboxes. The TAF-X is actually good stuff and costs $15 per .5L at a lotus dealer.

A GL4/5 fluid has the EP additives (extreme pressure) that are found in a GL5 fluid but without the corrosiveness to copper and bronze metals in the tranny.

In theory, the GL-4 fluid offers less protection than the OE GL4/5. The VW501.50 requirement corresponds to the protection / performance found in a GL5 fluid.

Some manufacturers also refer to this as GL4+.

A good fluid which offers a slightly thicker base like MT-90 is MotylGear 75w90 which is a GL4/5 fluid that isn't corrosive to the syncros.

www.purems.com carries it.

Default Thanks - learn something new everyday.....i've run MT-90 in 5 VW's and Audi's ....

in fact my dealer used to put it in my VW's. I just put MT-90 in the TT and it's shifting better than it was previously.

Default I was gonna go the way of the MT-90 as well (A3 02Q tranny) but ended up trying this stuff

highly recommended and tested on BITOG.

A lot of the MTL-R users were former MT-90 or MT-90/MTL users too.
