Home Theater Geeks - Help me spend my money !

my feelings, too, usually -- but...
the store in Pasadena actually has a couple of reasonably informed salesguys. And they're the only local dealer for Onkyo and I at least wanted to check out what I will probably end up buying online. Just saw the Hitachi there and thought I would check it out.
Of course, their idea of high-end speakers is Polk (and not the good polks...)

Yeah.. if not Denon I would have gone Onkyo
Good choice.
I called a place in Van Nuys (since I'm in the boonies out here in SCV) and he agreed to drive out here. I'm gonna call them tomorrow and have them out, they sounded very good. I'll let ya know.

I found a site listing ISF techs and there's a guy whose "business" address is literally two blocks
from my house in the Pasadena area. It's a residential street, so I'm not sure what to expect, but I figure I'll call him.
What is your guy charging? What will he do for you?
Are you familiar with the two dueling ht forums (hometheaterspot and hometheaterforum)? There are a few ISF calibrators who post there and they usually give quite a list of things that get adjusted...

I think he said $350 or so for each input and he basically
said just do the DVD composites. He said he would glady accept my $700 for doing the DVD and SAT but said he would really only reccomend the DVD since that is the high quality device.
Basically they bring the tuning devices and set them up to the screen and finly tune the colors, brightness, alignment, etc.

I just picked up the Pioneer Elite 53"

at a high end store up here. Only thing that came close to picture quality was the 64" Pioneer Elite, which wouldn't fit in my room!
The Elite has everything, and again, the pic is amazing. Had it side-by-side the Tosh and Sony and it was scary just how awful the Tosh and Sony look in comparison.
Costs a few K more than the others, but worth it.

that's a great tv and would have been my choice, but it's just too big for our room...
the cabinet I built to hold it was designed to match the built-ins surrounding our circa 1919 fireplace on the other side of the room.
also, our seating area is about two feet too close to the tv area for that set to really look good. I tried setting up a chair eight feet away in the store and found that the picture isn't as resolved as at 10 feet. The 42" Tosh looks fantastic at 8 feet, but kinda small at 10 feet.
The $1500 I save buys me my Dynaudio speakers, though...
