Default Choose 1.........>

If I built you 2 engines, which one would you want? Max RPM limit on both is 7,000 RPM.

Engine #1 Max HP- 400 @ 6,800 RPM
Max Torque- 300 ft/lbs @ 4,500 RPM

Engine #2 Max HP- 390 @ 6,800 RPM
Max Torque- 325 ft/lbs @ 4,500 RPM

Just for fun.

It says "Maximum acceleration at any speed occurs at the HP peak." What part don't you understand?

insufficient info, need curves and tranny info. With CVT, I'll take #1.

Default I recently read an article that was about HP vs. torque and it is contradictory to your claims.

I dont recall what the article was in but it caught my eye because of discussion on this forum. I used to think that HP was responsible for acceleration but the article put most of the responsibility on engine torque, up to about 60mph or somewhere around there.

I wish I remember where the article was. If I remember I will post. It was interesting because it talked about how people misperceive HP being responsible for acceleration and how the car manufacturers market HP numbers but not torque numbers.

Doesn't surprise me, there's a lot of misunderstanding out there.

Default I'm certainly not a physicist (but I don't think I'm the only one)...

Unfortunately your argument is an oversimplification and misunderstanding of Physics. Consider the following points:

1) Hp = (Torque x Engine Speed) / 5,252

2) It's my understanding that the torque and horsepower ratings provided by manufacturers are calculated at the flywheel, not the wheels.

3) It's true that the way your car uses the hp and torque created by its engine is directly related to the sets of gears between the engine and the wheels. However, considering the above statements, let's just forget about how the car's gears may effect the torque value at the wheels, because where the torque @ the wheels drops, so too does the hp at the wheels. (See #1 for explanation of the correlation)

The measurement of a car's horsepower @ the wheels or flywheel is directly related to the amount of torque measured at those points. I'm not discounting the importance of horsepower, but your argument emphasizing hp over torque simply doesn't carry through very well. I'm sure someone will correct me where I might be wrong. lol

Default Why then is the L98 shifting at 1600rpm over it's HP peak? Why do drag racers calculate shift points

..based based on minimum torque drop differentials, and why is the a whole chapter on this subject in the book Auto Math?
