Default You open the hood so you can hear the throttle valve adjusting.

When it stops, you're done I believe. It has been along time since I did this, and it was just once. I think the open door is also only to allow you to hear better - since I have a roadster, wasn't an issue..The other part is correct - turn key to ignition, do not start engine.

Default it lets the ECU "re-learn" the throttle's various positions

and can improve response and driveability, if the throttle was out of spec in tghe first place. That's why people ike to do it after installing new mods - so they know that's working right.

Default So......

by turning on the key but not the engine, the computer will adjust _______?? I think I'm still slightly confused as to what actually happens.

Default The blank in your q. would be 'throttle valve'...

It's the unit inserted into/bolted to your intake manifold, charge air hose coming out the other end.

Default The only issue is that I have read that the key 'trick'>>>

while it does cycle the throttle through its positions, doesn't actually cause any re-learning. That seems to be the subject of some dispute. If you can't VAG it though, nothing to lose by trying!
