How do I tell if my '03 225 TT has VVT?

Under the main engine cover, just up and left of the fuel rail. AMU shown here:

I'm assuming this still means variable valve timing??
If so, in most cars I thought this created more power in the higher rpm's. However with the stock 225 TT there seems to be no difference except for APR's stage III+ kit claims 13 more HP with the VVT engines compared to the non-VVT.
