How fast can you go on 1st gear before the engine cuts off the power?

It did happen several times. When I ran really hard on 1st gear, suddenly the engine lost power. I had to slow down and shifted to 2nd to get the power back. How could that be? The car should retain the power on 1st gear as long as the driver wants. Please advise

Why press so hard on 1st gear? The rev limiter exists to ensure you don't damage your engine, tranny, etc.
Try shifting, you'll end up going much faster. :-)

You can go all the way up to 5k for more 'aggressive' driving style. If your car is new and at less than 1000 miles, use a lowe shift point (~3.5k) until after the 1000 mile mark.
1st gear in my car has always been a bit 'short'. I always want to keep it there a bit longer but the rpm's just come so fast.
Good luck and don't worry, you won't break it.

getting a Nissan Sentra SE-R for beating around like that...please don't hurt that beautiful machine of yours in this way!
I prefer to get the car in gear and then wind it out to 5500 rpm, which is the top of the torque curve in my 1.8T A4. Sure, I'm only running 170 hp, but it pulls very nicely once I break over three grand.
