How many megapixels does one REALLY need? 5? More? Less?

I've shot film on anything from a Nikkormat, to a Canon A1, to just about the entire Canon EOS line. Also have some time on Hasselblad 500CMs.
On video, I use a Sony VX-1000.
My digital is a Sony F707. It's a 5 megapixel camera. Zeiss optics (albeit the cheap version of Zeiss, which is still pretty friggin' good). It's more than I needed, but it's got a lot of power. I don't print much of what I shoot, and if I did I wouldn't need much more than a 2-3 MP camera... unless I was trying to compete with film, which I'm not.
Another thought: while film may be closer to 20 MP, your average consumer camera have such ****ty optics that the film could be MUCH worse and still look just as good. Optics matter, a lot! (which I'm sure you know if you do any medium format)

Check this Canon out. I just bought it a month ago and love it! Price has also come way down since last Dec. ($799) I paid $569... Got a friend waiting for the Canon D60 ($2,200 for 6 megapixles) but he's doing landscapes in large format!<ul><li><a href="http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canons40/page2.asp">http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canons40/page2.asp</a</li></ul>

I ran into a guy in Vail, CO several years ago. He was a scenic postcard/poster photographer. He shot all of his stuff on a Nikon SLR. One day he was out without his gear and saw a beautiful shot. So he took it... with the Kodak Royal Gold disposable he happened to have on hand. It was one of his best sellers for years.

for ~$1000, 4.1 megapixels, 3x optical, 2x digital zoom. Of course now it should be cheaper. Additionally, i beleive BestBuy still runs this "same as cash" program when you use your BestBuy card (apply withing the store) where you don't pay any interest for three years (at least back in November).

That she just got (?) I have the same camera and it takes great shots and has all the control you could ask for. It is a 5 million pixel camera and the resolution is extraordinary. It is well suited to interiors and macro work because of the lens that comes with it is a little wide (That suits me fine) there is a full range of other lenses available as well. The camera is a little complicated, but it tolerates well my "savant" style of photography :-) It is tough as nails with a titanium case and it is the top of the line Nikon (they make sturdy **** IMHO). New mine cost 1,200 +/-. I love the ability to see what you get (or didn't get in the LCD, that allows me to push it around for desired effect) Also it "looks" like a real camera (don't know why that matters, but it does to me). I'm a painter that likes to smear stuff around and the camera gets me a lot of "found images" easily :-) a

I've shot a lot of SLRs with Zeiss optics - so I found that attractive.
I actually have a collection of cameras, but shoot the following: an older Nikon "F" body, a Leica rangefinder and an SLR, a Canon EOS 1N and a handful of medium formats. The latter usually as a hobbyist, only.
Again, I don't know my end intent in getting into this medium, but I would rather pay for quality once... :-)

In my office couple of guys get themselves more and more expensive cameras (don't know, maybe they compete). The last one I saw was about $2500 and looked awesome but neigher of them ever had a single picture taken that I liked. It's like learning to drive manual in Ferrari.
