Default At how many miles it is safe to replace the timing belt?

Ok I read quite a few horror stories for the Audi TT's timing belt and how the manual sais to be replaced at 105k, but they usualy break ~60k. My question is if it is even safe for me to wait until 60k? My car is 2000 and currently has 39k miles. I bought it from a doctor (an elderly guy) and I know that he hasn't drivven the car hard... Suggestions?

Also what would be the cheappest place that you know where I can get my timing belt replaced and how much would it cost? (average
I am located in MA, but wouldn't mind driving to NH, ME, RI or CT

Default At that age, I'd replace it. Water pump impellers also tend to fail...

Really, it's got nothing to do with how the car is driven.

Default You think it hasn't been driven hard because he is a Dr. or because he is old?

Plenty of exceptions to either of those observations. At least 30 % of the guys at HPDEs are over 50. Some of them are Doctors too. My opinion is that it is never too early to change a TB once you begin to worry about it. It certainly can however, be too late.

You got me on this one! And you are right - looks can be deceiving...

I would love to change it immediately, however I do not have the $$$ at the moment...and I'd rather not do it now if I can drive safe for another 15k miles or so...that's over a year for me. I have no idea how much a timing-belt replacement is on an Audi, but I don't think it would be less than $800 right?

Default You might be pleasantly surprised....it's gonna be cheaper than having

to pay thousands for a new engine !

Sorry to scare you bud, but I've heard soooo many sob-stories off people who haven't replaced their timing belts at either 60,000 miles or 5 years old (whichever comes first).

Don't become another statistic....pleeeease ;-)

Default Even with low miles, replace at no more than 6 years

My 01 (in service June 00) had only 20K miles when I replaced it earlier this year, but the impeller was already cracking in three places. Tech said the timing belt looked like it had a lot more that 20K miles. I'd do it now, its a big dollar repair if anything in the timing harware fails.

Default Buy your own parts kit at dieselgeek.com

and save some money, but the labor will still run about $600 or so. Talk to am independent shop or two in your area for some quotes (any shop that works on VAG/Audi cars will have done a bunch of them). You want ALL the parts replaced-- timing belt, roller, tensioner, waterpump, thermostat, plastic thermostst housing, and serpentine belt--all accessible while they're in there.

Quick Reply: At how many miles it is safe to replace the timing belt?
