Default How to ship wheels/tires?

Is there an "easy" way to ship 4 used wheels with tires mounted on them?

Default Kinko's Fedex....

Buy their 24x24x24 box or find something similar - cut them in half so each have contains a wheel. Protect the wheel surface with something soft - not cardboard that will scratch.

I shipped St Paul MN to NJ for about $85.

Default best to use shrinkwrap before bubblewrap or cardboard...

this way, the wheels will not scratch at all. extra safety measure.

Default Yes

Cut out cardboard discs to match the sidewall diameter stopping at mid sidewall or almost to the tread. On the shiny side of the wheel, put a layer of newspapers, foam sponge or bubblewrap to give further protection to the wheel face, then strap the front and back cardboard discs to the wheel/tire with black plastic strapping material or strong strapping tape. I just got a package of 5 shipped to me this way. No problems.

You leave the treads exposed. Nothing can hurt it unless they roll them over a nail. :-)

Default Re: How to ship wheels/tires?

I'd check with whoever you are going to use to ship them. I recently shipped tires only through fed ex. I shipped 2 packages of 2. They were zip tied together. Fed ex said something about not being able to ship them that way with wheels to though. They may require you to box them up...

Default I shipped a set of wheels/tires.....

from Seattle to Washington, DC. They were 19s and weighed about 70 pounds each. I protected the front face of the rim with bubblewrap and cardboard, shrunk wrapped the entire wheel/tire and taped it all up....did not use a box. Shipped them via FedEx Ground for about $ 150 (including my discount from work account).

Default I've used Tirerack's method successfully many times - from 17" to 19" rims.

1) Find any used box that is larger than the diameter of the tire. I then trace the outline of the tire/rim, and cut the circle. Go to your local hardware, Wal-Mart, etc, for used boxes. Why pay for them?

2) Once you have the circle, use that as your template. I used 3 circles per wheel/tire. Two on top, and one for the backing.

3) Buy some small bubble wrap, or I used a combination of pet pee liners, and the buble wrap.

4) Trim some bubble wrap to cover the face so that the card board isn't directly on the rim face. Make sure to tape down the center cap and centering ring, this is to ensure they do not come loose and damage the rim.

5) Place one circular board next

6) Place another layer of bubble wrap

7) Place second circular board on top

8) I then tape the top down onto the tire so I can flip it over. Place the third card circular board as the backing, temporarily tape.

9) I lay the wheel on its side so I can tape more securely.

I actually wrap the entire wheel/card board assembly in packing tape.

Total cost to ship:
cardboard - free
bubble wrap - $5
packing tape - $15 for a pack of 9 (you'll need able two full rolls to do all)

$20 in materials, and time to cut/pack/tape.

FedEx is much cheaper. I created a FedEx account, so all I have to do is print my FedEx label at home, tape it on the box, and arrange for a pickup (or drop it off at a local FedEx/Kinkos). Cost to ship cross country (e.g., CA to Florida) comes out to be about $1 per pound, and that includes insurance.

There is absolutely NO movement of the card board on the wheel. You can practically drop the wheel on its face and not damage it (not that you should). Lastly, if you have lugs, bolts, etc., wrap them in bubble wrap, and tape tightly. You can then tape them inside one of the backing card boards before you place it on the rim.

Good luck! Here's some pics of the last set of rims I sold:
