How soon should baseball leather be treated?

How soon should baseball leather be treated?
I seem to recall someone saying "don't wait even a few days". Should I apply some sort of protectant and/or conditioner to my baseball leather interior as soon as my new TT arrives? Any recommended products?<p>-- joel
