meh...
i had a regular Mazda 3 rental car....and it was RUBBISH.
i then briefly drove a Mazdaspeed 3 that a colleague of mine has, and it was ok..quick, yes it was reasonably quick...handling was alright, style was ****, interior is average at best...soulful? NO!
....not sure where you're gathering that this car has soul and the GTI MKV doesn't!! i personally would much rather have the GTI...it was far more fun to drive, and has much more style IMO. I've driven a few GTIs over the last few years, and they've all been great.
as for me.....if it were MY money...i'd get an A3 2.0T......get a demo or a certified pre-owned.
i'd even say get the new Saturn Astra OR Volvo S30 over the Mazda. The Astra is basically an OPEL, and the Volvo looks great IMO.

NEW: Volvo C30.
i DIG the new Volvo. it's brilliant...and quite uncommon. One of the coolest new cars released in the past few years....and NO ONE is talking about it.
