I guess I need a new steering column?

So I took my car into the dealer yesterday morning for 40k service and to diagnose some popping in the suspension. I had already replaced the sway bushings and removed the plastic sleeves, so they were not the source. I assumed it was the ball joints or tie rod ends. Apparently they think I need a new steering column and recommend that I don't drive the car. I have never heard of anything like this. Anyone else?

the first rep I talked to was mistaken. I went by today to find out the scoop. For some reason they also replaced my brake rotors. I don't know why, but whatever. I also picked up my loaner, an 04 A6 S-Line 2.7T. not bad.
