Default Maybe this doesn't apply to all, but...

I do most of my driving on 2 lane roads. "Getting away" from this person to me, would mean driving faster, only 'giving in/inciting' the driver behind me. If I go faster, he'll still be on my ***. Not unless I double the speed limit, get pulled over and have my license revoked (not to mention a fine). Ah, no. Not going to do that. I'm sure has hell not going to pull over for this clown because who knows if he wants to jack me. mmm, no. Now that's for a two lane road. More than that, the easiest is to change lanes, let the person go by or whatever. I agree to that. The person that started this thread though sounded like they were on a major highway (multiple lanes available) and the tailgater just would go. In this case, moving over lanes might work. But, then again, if they are insane, then they'll follow you. It's hard to win in the war against tailgaters.

Default I've tried that with some success, but once the

tailgater got even angrier and moved up closer.
I must assume that people who tailgate are dealing with a lot of aggression, and I try to minimize opportunities for them to let it out on me. It's not easy to do sometimes.

Default Ain't THAT the truth! And if it's a nice, warm day, and

they are driving a 1987 Olds station wagon, listing to the side because the car has a broken spring, and if the car is burning oil, spewing out huge clouds of blue smoke....

You're right- I was on a multiple lane highway.
I had my cruise control set and was going 70 mph (the speed limit here on Long Isalnd, NY is 55).
My tailgating buddy could have passed me in either of the two lanes available to him.

Yeah, but change the direction of the jets, and fill your washer reservoir with motor oil first.

Default hitting brakes not such a good idea

a) if they don't hit you, they may follow you and beat up (or shoot you?), run you off the road, or just tailgate even closer until...
b) if they hit you, you have potentially more problems, assuming you survive the crash: enraged (or injured?) other driver, insurance woes, need car fixed or replaced, police statements, potential charges if witnesses saw you hit the brakes, etc.

basically, it's a lot easier (and safer for all) to pull over and let them by,
at least if they're being really obnoxious/dangerous.
some people follow too closely, but it's unintentional and/or it's just a little
borderline. but if it's really close, then I vote for self-preservation.
if there aren't any other lanes, find a place to pull off the road and let them by.
it'll help your peace of mind and your safety, since now you can watch the
road in front instead of watching the rear view mirror waiting for the collision...

of course, if the road allows, you can lose them. sometimes 90mph is enough, but maybe 120 will do the job (in theory, of course :-)

just my $.02

Default I used to do that, until one guy came up beside me and...

side swipped me on the Outterbridge. I hit the wall on the right, blew out both tires, then spun around and hit the center divider.

The guy? He just drove off into NJ. Cops could not pursue.
