Default I heard a belt squeal yesterday.

Does the timing belt usually squeal before it breaks?

Thanks

Default No, timing belt has teeth and wouldn't slip like that.

Probably the serpentine belt that drives the power steering/alternator. Could be the tensioner going bad too, two reported recent failures on here.

Default Serp belt is a lot less damaging if it fails and a lot easier to swap

If it would fail it wouldn't hurt anything, you'd just lose power steering and your battery would die forcing you to fix the issue. Repair is a lot easier and there's nothing there that can damage your engine if you happen to do it a little bit wrong like a timing belt.

Default Make that 3. Mine just did the same thing yesterday. I pulled the car out of its

winter slumber for a quick trip in the sun. It made a bad squeal which temporarily went away when I turned off the heat. It came back an hour later as I pulled back into the driveway. This time it was nasty sounding and maybe even a bit of grinding.

I'm going to pull the plastic covers and see if I can find the source. If not, I'm getting towed to the indie shop Monday.

Related question. I'm having my timing belt, tensioners, and water pump replace Monday for about $850 including OEM parts. The water pump will be a metal impeller. No thermostat included. Does that seem high? Labor is about $400.
thanks
Rob

That seems like about what my dealer quoted me, but I can save about one bill buying my own parts.
