Default just reporting the facts...if you watch the temp gauge like i do>>>

you will see the difference...the behr works no question....I just think the 10 deg farenheit is worth something...

Good luck either way...

Default Don't use a Behr, unless you get it from an Audi or VW dealer... >>

My shop used a Behr even though they assured me they would use OEM as I'd requested. The Behr ran about 100-103C instead of the 90-92C that the OEM thermostat does. After several months of screwing around, I picked up an OEM from my local VW dealer and had them replace it. Been running steady 91-92C ever since.

My .02= use the OEM.

Default did you monitor your temps>>>

via HVAC to see how warm it was running? It is subtle and not something you would notice via the cluster, IMO

Default Not since I replaced the tstat, was running 72 to 84 back then causing needle to dip one mark

I'll check again now. Which two channels were they? 49 and 51?

Default Some Behr thermostat research here...

<center><img src="http://www.dieselgeek.com/images/DCP_7885.JPG"></center><p>I saw this and felt some research was required.

I bought an OE tstat from the VW dealer this morning and compared part numbers. The Behr part number is 1.180.87.302 and the OE number stamped on the part is 1.180.87. I just got off the phone with Behr Hella Service USA which is the US distributor for the aftermarket version of this thermostat. The .302 ending only denotes that the thermostat comes with the buna o-ring seal as the OE version does not. The Behr representative assured me that the part numbers were the same but she is phoning Behr in Germany to verify that the parts are the exact same and are made on the same exact machines to the same exact specifications as the OE branded Behr tstats. I will hopefully have that confirmation on Monday, Feb 2nd and will report here when I do.

I also took the OE branded tstat and an aftermarket Behr version and put them in a pot of water and turned up the heat as shown in the picture. Both thermostats started to open together at 185F on my thermometer and both closed again when the temp fell below 185F. I rechecked my first result by cranking up the burner again and got the same result. Both opened visually the same amount.

Due specifically to Audi TT customer demand, I changed the plastic thermostat housing in my tbelt kits to use only OE housings. They cost twice as much but its one less thing to worry about. I will only add the OE Behr tstat to my kits if it is verified that there is *any* difference at all between the OE branded one and the aftermarket version of thermostat. I mean, why pay more for the same thing? If I were to substitute the OE tstat for the aftermarket one the price of the Audi TT timing kit would need to rise by $10.00.

Any thoughts?
