Im lost.... What is with this MAF thing??

Same here.
Looks like half of the postings in this forum are related the the MAF and DV.
Is it just a performance mod or do they go bad ? If so, what are the symptoms ?
Thanks,
Tal

Simple explanation
It is an electronic sensor in the air intake just after the air filter box. It measures air flow into the engine. This info is sent to the ECU. Apparently, and logically this sensor gets dirty in time, when dirty, false readings are sent to the ECU. Prior to cleaning the sensor my 180 ( 22,000 miles) would stagger and gulp around 4000 rpm, after cleaning runs great. I am of the opinion that a lot of the "bad" MAF sensors, are simply dirty sensors. Cleaning it is now on my monthly maintenance list.

OK... Let's see if I can get this discussion going >>>>
 MAF - Mass Air Flow: Sensor tells the ECM what the volume of air being sent to the engine. Sensor becomes dirty over time, reducing "measured" air flow... Solutions are:
1. Clean Sensor with Non Residue Electronic Spray Cleaner (remove or not to remove, that is the question). Performance improvement reported from slight to moderate. ~ $ 3.00 for cleaner "Monthly" prevenative maintenance task ??
2. Severe MAF problems requires replacement of sensor - AUDI OEM big bucks ~ $ 300 vs VW sensor "on sale" at $ 45 ... Results are "OK" with VW part... ?

A couple of people... >>>
Naturally, Steve (TTSchwing) on his website w/ pix... Various opinions out there right now on remove to clean vs clean without removal... I don't think there is a concensus yet... when in doubt - search (last few weeks)...

Some pictures....
Recently the check-engine light just started showing up on our A6. I had cleared it and it was back, so MAF was targeted... Audi wants $485 and there's not an easy VW part (sigh).
So a little cleaning- sprayed on alcohol followed by gentle use of compressed air. We did remove the sensor from the housing.
Pictures below - they were taken of the sensor end using an Intel microscope hooked up to a PC.

This is the first time this car has had this problem, 82k miles on a 1998 - I just hope my TT goes as far. Oh, I hope this cleaning takes too!

the microscope
