Immobilizer activation codes

Hi All,
I've been curious: It seems like my TT has the sensors for the 'chip' in the key, but for some reason Immobilizer was not activated on my TT. Apparently this is the expected behavior for cars of my vintage (225TTR, purchased Sep 2000).
So, the questions:
1) Is the feature simply not enabled for ECUs in the US market? Why?
2) Could I use a vagcom to set the bit to turn this feature on? Or is the code simply not there?
3) If the computer itself does not have the Immobilizer software, is there any way to get an upgrade?
Some of these issues may be lost in the past - search isn't working so well.

... at today's Boston area TT Tech day, the immobilizer was a mid-model year change. He showed us with the VAG tool the immobilizer ID of an example car. He also showed us a light on the dashboard that lights up when you start the car to indicate you have immobilizer.
There was some speculation among some of the owners about whether another indication of the mid-model year change was the lack of the Audisport S logo on the steering wheel. They had a 2001 TT that had the logo but had no immobilizer. (The example car had no S logo on the steering wheel, but did have the immobilizer.)

it does (at least mine does). It is pretty common knowledge that the only Audi car that has it is the new A6 4.2. Audi is also saying the new S8 will also have immobilizer. I have a 2001 225TTR (build 9/00) with a manual top. My immobilizer light comes on in the dash for a few sec when I start my car. I know this was a change in the new TT's. I'm not so sure everybody has it.

Um, I thought that ALL Audis since around '94 had immobilizers?
I *know* that '97 and forward has them...
/Andreas - in Sweden, tho
