Instrument Cluster?

On my way home from work this evening after I had been on the road for 30 mins or so I noticed that my TEMP gauge indicator was all the way to the left. After a minute or two it moved back to it's regular 12 o'clock position.
So, my questions.....
1. Does this indicate that my whole cluster is going bad and in need of replacement or could it be just the sending unit for the gauge or the gauge itself?
2. If I take it to the dealer and tell them of my problem can they fix it or will they have to accually see it happen before they do something?
3. What have others done in this situation?

1. Yes, it can indicate the gauge itself is going bad, or the temp sending unit, but most likely it is the gauge sticking. The next time it happens, tape the gauge and if the needle moves it is the gauge. The fix is the replace the cluster, Audi won't take the clusters apart and replace an individual gauge.
2. It all depends on the dealer. Some will accept your story most will insist on seeing for themselves and then you know how that will work. It never shows the problem for the dealer, only for you.![Frown](https://www.audiworld.com/forums/images/smilies/frown.gif)
3. Others have tapped the gauge and the needle moves and some have gotten the clusters replaced.

Mine would drop from 12 O'Clock to cold, then gradaully move back up. Eventually, the oil pressure light started coming on at idle as well. They put in a new cluster, no change. When they replaced the sending unit, both problems went away.
If the tap on the gauge fixes it, then it's probably the cluster, if not - I would try having the sensor replaced first.

I will keep an eye on it and when it happens again, I'll give it the "tap" test. And, if I'm anywhere near the dealer, I will drive right there to show them.
If it's not one thing, it's another.
