You know... I agree...
I had plenty of chips on the front of my TT. ANd I made a 4-inch long scratch on the trunklid when drying the car one time.
I did not really wonder about hard vs soft clear coats. I just realized the TT's STUNK!
My Explorer had very little chippage , but plenty of swirls/fine scratches. But I used to wash it with a sponge(in a circular motion no less). I learned the proper way of washing cars after I got the TT.
