Line-outs on the left, power on the right.
Resistor from pin 21 to GND.
Power is on the "FireWire" pins, 8-30VDC, perfect for the unregulated variable voltage in a car.
Remove the voltage, like turning the ignition key off, puts the iPod into 'pause.
However, turning the key back on, does not start the iPod, you need to hit the 'play' button.
Ignore the hot melt glue, it's needed to keep the small wires in place. The dock connector is very fragile.

What I would set out to do is build a motorized compartment to house the iPod that would most likely be connected to the headunit via a "Dension/Dice" like adapter. I could then control the iPod through the head unit and might even have the ID3 displayed as well. This is just a Cool Gadget to store the iPod. Of course I would also implement an emergency eject. I never said this was going to be an easy or cheap Project (but it's not impossible). My only concern would be the iPod compartment location.
