Several months ago I bought a Raytek MiniTemp IR thermometer. It turns out to be one of the handiest things I own ...
Basically it is a infrared thermometer with a very tight coverage angle, led readout and laser pointer to let you know what you are measuring.
Just the think for seeing what is too hot when you are working under the hood. It is also great for finding leaks in your home, overly hot ICs on a PC board, ferrets sleeping in the clothes (last night's revelation).
It is remarkably well built and reasonably accurate. I paid about $80 for one with the laser pointer (there is a verion without) - numerous places sell these on the web.
heres a random link showing it off

It turns out there are amazing pro versions of the same tool. Check out the RayTek site for details
