LOTTERY JACKPOT JOY.. PART TWO

LOTTO winner Cormac Handy made two promises once the shock of his pounds 3.3 million win sunk in.

Inspired by Ronan Keating's memorial to his mother, he has planned to finance a cancer charity.

And he will keep on slaving over a hot stove as long as his mates need him to cover their pizza restaurant shifts.

But yesterday chef Cormac headed straight for the nearest showroom to buy himself a brand new sports car.

He collected his fantastic cheque from the National Lottery offices in Dublin yesterday.

The 28-year-old told the Irish Mirror: "I'm getting an Audi TT Roadster. It's always been my dream car and even before I won I said one way or another I'd get one."

Lucky Cormac discovered on Wednesday night he had scooped pounds 3.3 2million, half of the massive jackpot.

And even though he can afford to retire for the rest of his life, he insisted on going to work the next day.

He explained: "I'm the head chef in Fat Freddy's restaurant in Galway.

"There was no-one to cover my shift so I didn't really have a choice. I couldn't let them down, millions or no millions.

"I found out on Wednesday night at about 11pm that I'd won.

"I was sitting in my apartment with my best friend Dara and we were drinking a bottle of wine.

"Dara told me to put on the Teletext to check the numbers because he said 'you never know, one of us could be a millionaire'.

"I started checking off the numbers one by one and by the time I got to the fifth number I was shaking.

"You would think we would have been jumping and dancing around the place but in fact we were very subdued.

"I was in total shock, it really hit me hard."

Cormac drove from Galway to his family home in Clara, Co Offaly, straight after work on Thursday to tell his family of his massive win.

He said: "I've four brothers and two sisters so I wanted to tell them altogether.

"One of my brothers, Gerrard, is in Spain on holiday so I rang him. He's cracking up because he has another week and a half to go before he can help us celebrate.

"We all had a few beers in the house last night, loads of friends and neighbours came in and a couple of people drove from Galway to congratulate me.

"They were arriving as late as two in the morning so we were all up until about 5am."

Apart from his new sports car, Cormac is not sure yet how he will enjoy the rest of his jackpot.

He said: "To be honest if I let myself think about it for too long, it gets a bit frightening.

"There's so much potential to do so much good. The list of things you can do is endless.

"I want to do something constructive and ongoing.

Something like that cancer charity that Ronan Keating set up in memory of his mother. That was very inspiring.

"It's going to transform my life and the lives of people who are close to me, I've no doubt about that.

"But for the moment I'm going to carry on celebrating. My sister and her husband have a pub in Ballycumber.

"So I think we'll arrange a proper full-on party in the next week or so."

The shaven-headed millionaire is currently single and plans to remain so for the foreseeable future.

He said: "I've been single for a while now and I like it that way.

"I'm more into going out and socialising with my mates.

"Besides I'm young and there's too much of the world to see before I tie myself down."

He said: "My mind is all boggled so I'm going to leave it for a couple of days.

"I was thinking of maybe dropping that other fella who won a line.

"We're around the same age and we're both in the catering business so already we have stuff in common.

"We could swap tips maybe on how to deal with all of this."

Cormac's best friend Dara Martin, 28, said: "We were stunned.

"All I could say was 'will I make some tea?'

"We checked and rechecked those numbers so often - it's all we could do.

"Cormac going into work the next day is so like him. He just couldn't let them down. Cormac is a really good guy with a good heart and he's sensible.

"As for women, well they were always paying him attention anyway.

"He's very charming. He'll be well able to cope."

Cormac's parents, Gay and Fergus, were still in shock at the news of their son's win.

Mum Gay, 51, said: "We were planning a family gathering anyway because our son Niall is home from Scotland.

"You can imagine the celebrations when we heard the news.

"Cormac is very sensible and he's worked very hard all of his life.

"I don't think this will change him. He has a strong character, he'll always be his own person."

Cormac's dad Fergus, 57, said: "The excitement has been incredible. The phone has been going off every couple of minutes since 7am this morning and RTE were with us this afternoon.

"No doubt there'll be a few more late nights but sure it's not very often something like this happens." Cormac now plans to sit back and take his time over the next few days.

He said: "It'll settle down soon and then concentrate exactly on what I'm going to do.

"I've had a few dreams in my head for a long time now. It looks like they're going to become a reality."

Small mention of visiting pubs, other than that, it's okay.
