Default Issue with rpm meter when idle

Hi all TT fans,

I am wondering if anyone had encounter similar issue with your TT. Thanks for your reply in advance.

Abnormal revs with the rpm meter. It revs between 400-700 rpm when the car is in idle on a traffic light, the car keeps humming. Similar case, the rpm drops to about 4-500 rpm for a split sec and immediately goes back up to normal (800 rpm) when the clutch in engaged. For a couple times the engine stalled when the rpm dropped in a parking lot.

Doesn anyone know the reason behind?

- I've cleaned the throttle body and the MAF. After cleaning the MAF, it hasn't stall but rpm still reving pretty bad.

Thanks all

You would probably get more response if you told us what year and model TT you have.

Sounds like it has a clutch, so it's a manual , so it's either a 180Q or FWD or 225Q.

Have you done a TBA and run codes using Vag.com?

I am having a 2000, 225Q with manual tranny.

My mechanic shop did run a Vag and return with no error.

After going through postings from other member, unplugging the MAF might be a good way to diagnoses. After I have MAF unplugged, everything seems to be back to normal. Although the RPM still slightly dropped to about 700 rpm, then back to 800 rpm when changing gear to Neutral ( i think just because of my high idling setup??) It seems to be much much better.

And now the question is...

1) Replacing the MAF is the way to go? Some people here posted the problem came back up again in a couple weeks after a MAF replacment.
2) It seems to be only a plug with a special screws, it that very easy to replace?

Thanks all once again
