Default Jack Stand question: I see the rubber jack pads and use them to quickly jack up the car, but...

once I have it in the air, where can I put some jack stands? I remember alot of posts showing pics of cars up on jack stands but now that I'm on this crappy dial-up it takes too long to search. Please post some pics if you have em.

Also, what is the correct procedure in lifting the back end of the car to have a little look around underneath without having it drop on my head ? Put it in gear, block the front tires,.... TIA

Default Look further inboard from the front rubber pads... there is a long frame rail...

protruding from the underside. Thats where I put my jackstands. I'll post a pic if I get a chance.

Default I just ran out to the garage to check. The rail doesn't go all the way back. Where could I put..

stands in the back of the car if say I wanted to remove some bolts clamping a real ugly pipe to the cats...

Default Use the suspension as close to the front of the car

where the rear control arm is at the pivot point. Did that make sense? lol

Let me try again.

You can place a jack stand under any control arm, whether front or rear. But make certain that the point of the control arm you place the jack stand under is as close to the belly pan of the car. This way you won't allow the suspension to actually be supporting the weight of the car. Does that make sense now? lol

Default I could . . .if I have pics from beneath the car . .. oh, wait I do!

<img src="http://larrytt.dnsalias.org/images/borla/stockmuffler02.jpg">

See the big greenish looking bolt to the right of the big red spring? That is the lower control arm bolt . . . put the jack as close to that bolt, but on the arm itself. It won't allow the suspension to travel and will hold the car rock solid.

I don't need no stinkin' arrows!

Default answers . . .

Car in gear and parking brake on.

The green bolt is further to the right. The main bolt securing the control arm to the car itself!

Your green arrow is actually pointing at one of 3 parts of the self leveling system for the Xenon headlights. Don't break this thing!

I jack the car up at the rubber donut, I think where your red arrow is, can't tell in that pic. Then the jack stand gets placed as above.

Make sense?

or . . .

you can jack the back of the car up in a single shot. Place the jack under the Haldex support brace and put both jackstnads under the rubber lifting points. Either way will work.

Default Actually, I think the second option will work best for me as the jack stands on the control arms...

that far in towards the belly pan might get in the way. Could you make a little picture for robby with stinkin' arrows showing the 'Haldex support brace' so my not so familiar with the underside of the car but soon to be can know where to jack the car up without punching a huge hole through the floor pan...lol. I like the idea of putting the jack stands under the rubber donuts. That should give me some room to fiddle around under there

Thanks again for the late night help Lar!

Default please don't ask me to create pictures at 2am! lol

Robby, Haldex is easy to spot . . .

It is a HUGE silver thing with a drive shaft heading towards the front of the car and an axle sticking out each side towards each wheel. Beneath it is a pretty hefty black support brace. The exhaust is actually tucked in nice and tight to it.

Do you know what a 'pumpkin' is on a rear wheel drive car? That is where the Handex is located on a TT. it is our rear differential, aka 'pumpkin'

When you look under the car look for this big support brace and slide the jack under it, then lift the car. Keep in mind that the car is now going to be balancing on the jack and could easily tip over, so don't lean on the car! Get this done fast and you will not have a thing to worry about

If you still require pics with arrows and anything else I will do it in the morning, ok? I am heading to sleep . . . falling asleep on the keyboard now! lol
