Jeep CJ-5 - Ok, I'm thinking of buying a 78 CJ. Any experiences with this hog?

Default I had a '97 TJ. You don't NEED doors...

No top, no doors == great vehicle.

Believe it or not, folks drive them around here in mid-winter (outside temp: 2 degrees F) that way...

BTW, I got rear-ended at around 15 MPH by a Dodge Ram 1500, and the damage to my Jeep was to my spare tire and to the rear tailgate; that kind of impact would have totalled my TT - the advantages of a vehicle with a full frame...

"It's a Jeep thing... you wouldn't understand."

Default BS. The TJ Wrangler is the most capable out of the box of any Jeep.

The TJ Wrangler has proven itself very reliable for off-road activities, comments of its detractors notwithstanding.

The TJ is actually a reasonably decent all-around vehicle, and your kidneys will thank you for the springs as opposed to the leaf suspension on the CJs and YJs.

Sure, TJs could use things like lockers and stronger axles, but for 99% of the off-roading you may do, odds are a stock TJ would serve just fine...

Default My references were based on my experiences which as i stated are mainly desert and rock.

where you do need a stronger vehicle.
I wont fault you the more comfortable ride though...

Default As a 93 YJ owner (modified) here are my observations

The CJ is a cool old style Jeep but it has some serious flaws compared to the YJ or TJ. On Road use, the CJ rides horribly stock, your lifted and body lifted version will be even worse. The V8 drop in is fairly common but is actually not the best engine for rock crawling or mountain stuff. Carborated engines do not work well when at wild angles. Bigger engine and tires means the already small brakes are over taxed, high CG means they tip over easy. If I was going to get a CJ I would get one that is bone stock and not all modded like the one in question, restore it to like new and enjoy it. Add on would only be roll cage, nerfs, air lockers, small body lift and 31's.

Problems with lifted Jeeps are the seals at the tranfer case, and body lifts shorten the shift linkage, so only 2" seems best to me. A new YJ is a great off road vehicle, as BillK said. Plus you can get it with a Dana 44 rear end. Just add ARB lockers, 31 mud terrains, nerf bars, winch, etc.. Biggest problem is there is no way to add a roll cage without screwing up the car like interior.
