Default Just got a call about Verizon DSL . . .

They are offering 30 days risk free and then first 3 months at $29.95. Then the price goes up to $49.95!

I ask the lady what the speeds are up and down.

768K download and 128k upload! I said my cable is faster than that. She then asked if I ever notice slow downs in the service during peak times? I said yes, but it is still faster than the DSL at its peak! lol Plus my cable bill is $29.95 every month for online service.

Thought that was pretty funny. Sorry, had to share.

What is everyone paying for their broadband access, what are the speeds you are promised and what are the speeds you are seeing?

I am paying $29.95/month
Promised 10mb down and 1mb up.
I get 3-5mb down and 1-1.3mb up.

I used to get 10mb in each direction then OptiOnline got popular and it has slowed down. Mike's service is much faster than mine. Yes, it means more people in my neighborhood have the service than in Mike's. lol

Default The speed for Verizon sucks and cable is way cheaper.

I hate the whole cable monopoly though also!

Default I happen to be home with a sick child today so I can run these tests..Went to DSL Reports

and ran two:

First one is 734 download and 122 upload
Second one is 1134 download and 82 upload

I'm paying $34.95 a month and own my cable modem.

Default No cable in my area !!! :-( Had to go with Verizon but company picks up the bill. Like any DSL ...

it all depends how close you are to the Verizon CO (Central Office). I'm about a block away so I have constant download of around 1 to 1.2 (I know, its only supposed to be 720K yet mine keeps coming up faster). Up is usually 128K (sometimes it spikes a bit higher). Never had a problem with it though.

Default I would kill for the speeds you're getting.

I've got ATT Broadband, and I get 10m down/128k up. The 128k up is what kills me. They say they do it so people won't run servers, but I think 128k is a bit too restrictive.

I think I pay $50/mo but that gets me at least 5 computers on without a NAT server. DSL would definitely be a slowdown for me since the neighborhood I'm in doesn't fall victim to the "peak time" stuff...One of the very few perks of living in a smaller city.
