Side markers obtaind from Import Vision see link - tel 805 306 1694
I believe 2002 are the same
The perimeter edge on the smoked lens did appear lighter but it is not noticeable when installed.
To remove OEM lens firmly push the the edge of the lens nearest the door (back edge) toward the front of the car at the same time with your finger nails raise the back edge till it pops out . The lens then simply pulls out of a rubber housing.

http://www.importvision.com/</a

Start from the right side.
Insert a small flat blade screwdriver behind the plastic bezel, next to the fender panel.
Push the blade to the left.
You are compressing a plastic tab on the left side.
You will probably need to push hard.

Then, without scratching the paint, pull the blade towards you.
The other side should pivot on the left side, and you should then be able to pull the whole assembly out.
The lamp socket is protected by the black vinyl grommet. You can pull the lamp socket out of the lens assembly. I think it's a twist-turn to remove the lamp.
You can then see how this stays in place, in the slot in the fender.

A neat assembly technique.

my Avant, GTI and now the TT and never had a problem getting them out. No risk of scratching the paint either.
