Default K04 Kit question

The website of PES shows the following text:

"Please note that a full flow exhaust system from the catalytic converter back is required for use with this turbo."

What kind of exhaust to they mean. Would the typical Borla or MTM exhaust do? What is the difference with the stock exhaust?

Thanks!

Default The Borla or MTM or supersprint or Miltek/Forge etc will all work for this application.

What that statement means is that in order to get the most out of the K04 and to reduce the exhaust temperatures you need to run a less restrictive exhaust of larger diameter than stock.

The stock exhaust is "crimped flow" no more evident than when it is off the car, unbelievable.

It seems like Audi purposely cripples this vehicle..

Default Here is the problem with OEM exhaust and why performance exhausts..

need to be used with chips (higher turbo boost output) and using K04 turbos on cars set up for K03 turbos...
The 'crimp' going under Haldex is severe and with the performance exhaust (Forge Miltek anyway) the piping in the same area is a full 28% larger than OEM. And yes the rest of the performance exhaust system components...muffler and resonator (if one has the latter) are also 'tuned' for reduced back pressure from turbo boost.

Michael, would you happen to know if this same exhaust design is used on FWD?

I have pictures of ExTTreme's FWD TT exhaust install, I can check when I get home tonight.

Default Also remember that the muffler & resonator are usually the greatest flow restrictors.

Even more so than a crimped pipe when checked on a flow bench.

Of course the larger uncrimped pipe flows better, but it is muffler restriction that's critical.
Very few muffler manufacturers publish flow numbers for their products.

As much as a larger cat-back helps a stock 180, a chipped and K04'd 180 absolutely needs the larger capacity exhaust to realize the gains.
