Default Up at FallingH20 when we TTers were at OhioPyle (sp?) and in the parking lot...

this Chrysler van pulled up, doors open and about 6 people get out...wind shifted and the STRONG smell of major burned up brakes came over our way. Their discussion was 'what is that smell?' and 'boy I had to stay on the brakes all the way down the mountain'...front brake were fried/smoking the whole bit. Trying to be helpful I commented about what the smell was about and suggested using lower gear coming down hills and lay off the brakes a bit...one guy turned to me and said in the 'mind your own business' voice and said..'we know how to drive and besides it is an automatic and selects the gear car goes into..'
Anyway...this is one of the 'no comment inDUHvidual stories'

Agree. Semi metal compounds are not to hard to mold into optimal pad contact area.

Lots of pad left... 7K of mostly easy and highway miles.

Default well...

I never rest my foot on the brakes unless I'm ON the pedal. My "friend" claims the same.

sounds like a good explanation, but there is no resisual damage. things never got so hot to discolor wheels or anything that severe. I don't think the rotors really cooked to that point... while the brakes may have been applied a little too gradually and long, there is no warpage. Rears appear totally normal. Just to be safe, the car was parked with e-brake off after the 100-60 braking as brakes were still a little warm at that point. After the second braking session, the car was driven for 20 minutes at normal speeds with almost no braking, so there was adequate cooling time. There is oodles of pad left.

basically, though, I see your point... perhaps harder braking for less time is a better technique. Thanks.

Default That's especially funny considering that most owner's manuals describe how you should....

...drop an automatic tranny into a lower gear for long & steep downhill runs.

Default so that begs the question, now what?

the EBC pads have been on the car for 7K miles of rather easy braking, except one track event and some mountain roads. other then that, its all highway miles. this is the only time I've expeienced the hot brakes smell or seen any rotor discoloration.

That said, the pads should be more then properly bedded in, and a local shop double-checked the pad install and its just fine. So why is the pad contacting the rotor unevenly?

FWIW, the blue stripe on the passenger front wheel is not as pronounced as the picture, which is the driver's side.
