Here's the message I sent to Audi about my feelings concerning the 3.2 and its reply. Kind of generic but maybe I'll get another reply from someone else in product planning who knows:
Dear Scott:
Thank you for contacting Audi of America.
We certainly appreciate you taking the time to share your comments with us
regarding the new TT model. We welcome feedback from our customers regarding
their experience and preferences. This information is extremely important to
us.
Your note has been forwarded to the appropriate individuals for their
attention in future planning sessions. We look forward to hearing from you
again if we can help with any other information or be of any further
assistance.
Again, thank you for contacting Audi.

Model :2004 TT 3.2
Comments :I'm on my second TT now, a 2001 225 Quattro Coupe after also
owning a 2000 180 FWD Coupe. These were my first two Audis but I have long
been a fan and have owned five other VW/Audi products dating back to 1974. I
was quite excited to hear about the addition of the 3.2 TT model. General
interest on the Audi internet forums I read for the car is lukewarm, but I
thought the VR6 was a great addition and I was eagerly looking forward to my
third TT. However when I discovered recently that it was for sure available
with DSG transmission only, I decided I was not interested. This may be a
great addition for people who love "new" tech and for automatic drivers, but
for an old-school driving enthusiast like myself, it is a deal breaker. I
will not buy one without a traditional manual transmission. I have a
Volkswagen R32 with the same drivetrain on order, if it turns up with DSG only, I
won't but it either and will leave the VAG family. I need/want a new car
this year and am disappointed that Audi chose to try force feeding a new
technology on its most involved model's drivers. I am sure my note won't
change anything, but I just wanted to Audi USA to notice when the new 3.2
TT's don't start flying out of dealerships, this is probably the main reason.

I read that only 1000 were being imported into the U.S. Don't know if that is for all of 2003 and that more will come in 2004. Seems like Audi is limiting production for just the reasons you mentioned. I'm wondering if Audi is going update the body styling on the 225s as they are doing on the 3.2. Would that satisfy the TT manual trans folks???

DSG is a tiptronic replacement. If you want to drive it as an auto you can. SMG doesn't offer that option. By all reports DSG is much smoother and more drivable than any of the sequential offerings.
I think it's funny how people are so scared of the idea of going to something new and better. I also don't believe for one second that the car will only be offered in DSG. I certainly will be initially, because it's a good way to put DSG into the market into a stylish package. But it WILL be offered in a manny6.
