now that it's getting colder (in some parts), seems a bit more relevant. it's NO good to let the car warm up at a stand still, right? from a cold start i try to not go over 3k rpms, stay below 5 lbs of boost -- until temp gauge is normal. and double clutch the first few shifts.
does the oil warm up at an equal rate as the coolant? or should we wait a few minutes even after the temp gauge is normal.
0 weight oil, or stick with 5w 40 oil that i'm using now. seems like if i'm careful i can stick with 5. i'm in WV. average temps will probably be in the 20's
anything else? can't wait for the snow!

I usually drive a few seconds after I turn on my engine (as the manual suggests). I usually hit normal running temp (about half on the gauge) after 4 or 5 blocks.
I think what is more important is the cool-down process (for the turbos), so I usually cool my engine down for a minute or 2.

Keep it at low rpm though I may go a little higher, especially once the needle is on the move (3400 max?) and keep it out of boost or limit it to brief spurts of up to 5 lbs. I do think oil temps lag behind coolant a bit, so the coolant temp needle being centered is not the best indicator.

I typically give it 5-10 seconds to let the oil circulate before taking off. Then I just drive conservatively until it's warmed up. The logic is that the car operates best at "normal operating temperature," and sitting at idle it takes longer to get to that temperature.
