Loud noises and puddles..............
Does anyone else get a noise like the exhausts falling off, when you drive through a puddle?
I also get a lot of vibration, like an engine misfire. Could be that water's being drawn into the intake???<img src="http://homepage.ntlworld.com/maddot99/916.gif">

Loud noise can be from the sudden vaporization of water...
by the hot exhaust system.
You are subjecting a spray and stream of water all along a very hot surface.
This would cause a rapid state-change.
think of how much noise you get when you activate the button on a steam iron.
Multiply this, and I think you get the idea.

I think it's a real problem. Twice now after
big rain storms, I'll be on the highway and drive through a large puddle. Following this I have a very loud, grinding sound coming from underneath. I think it's water getting into some of the drivetrain, which can't be good. It only happens when I drive through a puddle, and the noise lasts (I guess) only as long as it takes for the water to drain from the drivetrain. My rear differential is actually very loud now, and I need to bring it up with my service dept. next time.

Is it a Quattro?
I had this happen only once, during a downpour, so there was much water on the road. The best answer I was vibration from cool water hitting a very hot exhaust. The very tight fitment of the exhaust on the Quattro model probably contributes.
