Engine coolant temperature gauge always point to the lowest spot. Sometimes, not very often, it will move slowly to middle but then it will fall back. Is the cluster problem or sensor? The fuel gauge seems ok. It is 02 model. Anyone have any idea?

You can use Vag.com to test the cluster and the temp sensor.
The temp sensors fail often but it's not a gradual change, they mostly work or they don't. The clusters tend to fail in the overheating position.

Lets see if I can remember this.---- With engine running on the hvac control panel.
press Rec. and then the ^ arrow
then turn the dial to read 49 and press ^ again.
Now you are reading actual coolant temp in Celsius.
You will find that the gauge is not linear in it's response.
It reads centered over an appro 20 degree celcius range.
From about 80 C to 101 C it stays right in the center. Go up above 101C and it moves up one mark and holds there till temp rises significantly again. Normal cruising themp is 90-95C.

It has 110000 km on it. I'll see if I can get hold of a vag.com to check. Actually, have the problem for more than a yr... Will it affect other thing?
