Default MAF missing thermistor?

I've been having problems getting code P1128 (too lean) started a few weeks after getting a new battery, new air filter a month or so ago.
Reading the forums it sounds like it could be a MAF problem, maybe brought on by the new stuff - car goes a lot faster after the battery was disconnected.
Anyway, I inspected the MAF and noticed there is no thermistor on the outside part of the sensor, but it's drawn on where one could go. Is that normal?
'01 TT/225, seems to run fine
