Default meem: I did some flashing for you ; )

It's OK, no one saw me!

You are correct, and I was wrong. The US tails DO have a different reflectivity on the outside 1/4 of the housing. I took several pictures of the UK, EU, and US parts, but this one shows it best. UK is on top, US is on the bottom:

After seeing what I didn't believe to be true, I looked VERY closely at the US housing. I can't tell how they do it, but you can see where the different reflectance area starts.

All three tails Fotki...

Default your thoroughness is appreciated :-) so how would i ...

go about having the reduced reflectiveness, white back up lights (both sides), and red turn signals? is it possible?

Default Up until the red turns it would be no problem. You know that amber turns are the way it is SUPPOSED

to be, though, don't you?!

To get all the rest, you need a UK drivers side, and an EU passengers side. You can get both through Vagparts.com (e-mail Martyn, he will set up the order for you).

The problem with the turns is that the lens shell itself is a different color (they use a different insert in the mold when it is made). You "could" cut out the UK/EU inserts, find donor US inserts, and fit them in. That would not be impossible, not even that hard for a machine shop, but you would be gut-ripping 2 US housings and not be able to re-use them. Another option would be to use a Red light in the US/UK housings. I can try to see what a red LED bulb would do in there and take some pics (and more important give you "on the ground" feedback). My guess is you won't like the output, though...

Let me know, I will try/do what I can. Like I said, I swapped my solely to get the amber turns, so you wanting them in red is an additional challenge!

Default i see. the reason i want a red blinker is ...

that right now i have only two exterior colors when blinking: red (rear), and "cream" (side; front). in fact, i went through a lot of work in order to reduce the number of colors when blinking from three to two -- so i'm not eager to turn the car back into an angry fruit salad (orange (rear), red (non-blinking rear lights), and cream (side; front)) when turning ;-)

are you sure that the u.s. version is the only one where they blink red?

Default what made you want to make the sides cream rather than fronts yellow?

if you would've made the fronts yellow, you could buy the euro/uk tails, and have one exterior blinking color :-(

it was probably due to having to take the whole bumper off to change the parking lights, right?
