It was the coilpacks. Replacement is very simple, just follow the faq here. I had to leave the TT in a supermarket parking lot overnight. Bought 4 coilpacks from the VW dealer the next a.m. and replaced #1 and #2 (i.e., easily accessible) packs, started it up, and no more problems. After calling VW roadside assistance for my wife's '08 Passat (more on my VAG failure day below), I jumped in the one remaining working vehicle ('08 Escape) and headed for the dealer. Guy at the dealer said the CEL would clear after 40 or so miles. I told him to be on the lookout for a Passat coming in on a flatbed.
I was planning to replace #3 and #4 when I had a chance, but the next day as I was headed to the Audi event at Laguna Seca, BANG! it happened again. I woulda been really pissed to miss my first track event. Fortunately, I was 1 mile from home, so I limped back. Hardest part was waiting for the engine to cool. Again, nothing involved, just need to remove a few 5mm allen screws, a bolt, and one electrical connector.
Be sure to do all 4 at once. How many miles on your TT? Mine blew at 63,700. I bought the car used at 63,200 and immediately replaced the timing belt and water pump. Was going to get around to the coil packs...
About the Passat, it started rough, then flashed a CEL. Turned out to be a bad diverter valve at 11,000 miles. I worked the TT hard at Laguna Seca with no problems whatsoever. Hope I'm done with VW/Audi problems for a while. Good luck on the CEL. Coil pack replacement is not the worst thing in the world.

I replaced all four of mine on the side of the road. Almost joined the flaTT bed club, but my mom delivered them for me. :P

Will have shop VAG Comm to make sure no other issues and replace all 4 coil packs. Charging me cost for all parts so no biggie. I'm just hoping I didn't damage the catalytic converter!
