Mileage Gauge Question...
Ok, someone can set me stright here, but from what I noticeda simple opening of the gas cover resets the mileage computer? So, if I only put in half a tank, does it know that?

Interesting....fyi, I found w/ my spreadsheet that the computer isn't exactly right.
'course that could be my not topping off the tank each time.
FYI, my ave mpg, avg mph, trip, etc. all don't reset at refueling (or even opening the gascap w/o putting in any fuel). Miles to empty reset all on their own though, is that what you're talking abt.?

Right..
The only thing that "resets" at fueling is the "miles left" reading. All the others need to be reset manually.
I was just wondering if that "miles left" reading would still be accurate if I didn't fill the tank all the way?

Ok cool...
Just didn't want "200 Miles" and then run out of gas... which I really didn't think was the case.
Thanks! I don't need that kind of accuracy.. when it gets to around 40 or 50 miles left, I know it's time to fill up.

Right..
I basically stick to the practice of using the real analog gauge for fillups, and use the digital "miles 'til empty' gauge as a secondary. I pretty much wait for the computer to say "get gas", which is whenever the computer gets to '30 miles to empty', and then from there I use the analog for acuracy. At this point, I almost always fill up, as I had read the horror stories of Brad Willis getting stuck with an empty tank twice in a very short period of time. Since then, I've learned not to totally rely on the numbers that our gas gauges spit out, both digital and analog.

FYI
I have some concerns about this type of practice (waiting till the computer tells you to fill up) and here is the only reason:
The fuel pump is cooled by the fuel only. This means that when the tank is very low the pump is slightly under-cooled and this reduces its life and performance.
I was told this by an Audi tech. He won top tech for AoA last year and REALLY knows his stuff. I've seen him work on my car and others and I would trust his info without hesitation...
