I bought an extra MAF housing (expensive!) for the TT just to make sure I had a backup in case anything went wrong. My car, being a MY2001, actually had 2 plastic screens, one at front and one at the rear of the MAF tube. I did see improved throttle responce at low/mid revs with the screenless MAF, but the car is running a bit lean near the redline. The voltage on the O2 sensors drops near 0.7, whereas it used to be near 0.75~0.8 before. Should be related methinks. Btw, running a stock filterbox with a free-flow replacement filter (non-oiled) and peak value in 4th is 206 g/sec. I can see up to 216 g/sec in 5th or 6th. I also remember a debate like this at the UK TT forum. Someone there said that the plastic screens were to normalise air flow around the sensor, whereas the metal one was to reduce static from the incoming air. Not sure about the static since in that case the metal screen should be grounded, isn't that right? How can that be since the MAF is made of plastic?
Make sure you do your tests using the same sensor and only exchanging MAF tubes (if you have two of them that is).

We're seeing similar G/sec numbers. As to running lean, it looks like you're fine to me. This is a little hard to read, but the voltage at stochiometric (1 lambda), perfect 14.7 A/F is .4 to .5. Your .7 readings are still comfortably rich for heavy boost conditions. Mine settles in at about the same range on my gauge.

p/n: 06A 906 461 A. Just use a tamper proof torx screw to remove the MAF, and replace your existing MAF.
VW price = $50, Audi price = $300
It's the same MAF sensor, different housings.
