put a jack under the control arm and slowly raise it until the strut slides into place

Is the strut cup spread apart?

Default This is what I did also. I just installed Bilstein's and had the same problem

The Bilstein had an allignment tab on the strut that passes into the control arm. That tab prevented the shock strut from lowering into the hole and bottoming out regardless of how much the control arm was spread. I finally did as suggested above. I applied a jack and compressed the shock until it bottomed out and allowed the clamping bolt to go through. Just go slow

Default Just did mine last month...

and Mr. Kareem of WheaTT's trick worked extremely well:

take a 3/8 ratchet wrench, which fits snugly into the gap on the back side of the strut cup. While prying the cup open, jack the control arm up and it should go in easily. The key is using the 3/8 ratchet to pry the cup open.
